Summer Vacation Day 34

So, I made it to my workshop today and I only had to hit the snooze button once this morning!

The workshop is going well, but they have us in the cafeteria sitting at cafeteria tables.  That makes for a long day!  Of course, I shouldn't complain about the long day because we were suppose to be there until 3:45 and actually got out at 2:45.

The presenter said that she learned the AC would be turned off in the building at 3:00, so she made the call to let us go early.

BEST PRESENTER IN THE WORLD!

Of course, this whole workshop is kind of a downgrade.  Believe it or not, originally, I was scheduled to go back to Orlando in July for a week with some other teachers from school.  But, before school let out for the summer my principal told us that for budget reasons it wasn't going to happen.  She paid for us to go to this local  two day version instead.

Gotta give her credit, she could have just scrapped the whole thing.  I'm glad she didn't!

Now, here's the run down of the best conversation I had today...

I was sitting with two other teachers from my school and we were catching up on what we've been doing since school let let.  One of the girls said that she found a new house and would be closing on it July 7 and that she had a pool.

Now, someone else had walked up to me and asked a question so I didn't hear the last part of what was being said completely about the new house.  To me, it sounded like she said, "I got parole."  I just couldn't understand why she was smiling as she said it!

I asked for clarification, "Did you just say you got parole?"  She continued to smile as she shook her head yes.

I sat speechless and stared at her until something clicked and she sat up straight and declared,  "Pool!  I have a pool!"

You have no idea how relieved I was!

This workshop should be quite interesting, because I'm going to be sleepy!  Until recently, I've done pretty good with keeping my days and nights sorted out.....until recently!

I do this every single vacation!  I mix my days and nights up!  As a matter of fact, I've been saying for years that if they even have a third shift kindergarten class I want to teach it!

For the last three nights I've forced myself to go to bed at 3AM.  Showing up at a workshop at 8AM should be interesting!

Wish I could just fast forward to the Gatlinburg trip already!

I've just finished up another week of doing absolutely nothing and totally loving it!  LOL!

Actually, that's not true.  I mean, just today, I vacuumed.  ALL BY MYSELF!  And, the other day, I made my very own and very burned grilled cheese sandwich for lunch.

On Monday and Tuesday I have another workshop to go to.  This one is local though, so no mini vacation on the school's dime for me.  Thank goodness I got a text from my friend, Nichole today reminding about it!  Of course, if the workshop is boring, I'll blame her for reminding me.  LOL!

Let's face it, this is going to have to be pretty awesome to beat the one in Orlando last week!

On Saturday, we're heading back up to Gatlinburg!  I can't wait!  Spending the Fourth of July there was magical last year and I know it's going to be just as awesome this year.

Oh, what a day it's been!

First of all after checking into the hotel on Tuesday, I hooked up with the other teachers from my school for dinner and drinks.  It was a beautiful night, so we hung around outside talking and watched the fireworks.

It was a little after 11 PM when I got back to my room and turned on the TV.  That was the first I heard about the little boy and the alligator at one of the other Disney Resorts.  It was so sad!  Orlando seems to be having a real run of bad luck.

Then, around midnight, I had just gotten into bed when the whole building started to shake.  I'm not kidding!  It was kind of scary!  Of course, I ran to the window to look out while I was trying to decide if someone was pounding on my door or the people in the net room had just completely lost their minds.  Turns out there were yet another set of fireworks going off!

These weren't normal fireworks though.  First of off, why would Disney be setting off fireworks at midnight on a random Tuesday night?  They also lasted longer than the normal firework shows.  The story we ended up being given was that they had decided to "test" the new firework show they'll be doing as part of their new Star Wars display.

Seriously, what idiot came up with the idea of testing fireworks at midnight for a place that has families with young children everywhere?  Can't you just hear that conversation.....

"Hey, I know!  Why don't we test the fireworks at midnight?  Everyone will be asleep and they'll have no idea what we're doing.  They'll be so surprised when we do the show for real!"

When I woke up on Wednesday morning I hopped in the shower and was then very disappointed to realize that there was no hairdryer in my room.  I didn't bring mine from home, because what hotel room doesn't have a hairdryer?!?

Guess who decided that they just had to accept the fact that they were going to have a couple of really bad hair days?

Guess who realized that there was a hairdryer hanging in a bag clearly marked "HAIRDRYER" in the closet area right before she walked out the door?

This girl, that's who!

I met up with the other teachers from my school for our free breakfast before we split up for our different workshop sessions.  Mine was really good!  The morning was going great and then we stopped for our mid morning break.

I was standing outside the restroom waiting for one of my friends when I saw someone else heading in.  Someone I didn't expect to see at all!  Someone I was happy and yet still very unhappy to see all at the same time.  Someone that is distantly involved with the news I'm waiting to hear.  Someone I didn't want anywhere near the people I came to this conference with.

You know how it is when you see someone somewhere you aren't expecting to and then you aren't sure if it was really them or not?  Well, that's what it was like.  We both said hello to each other, but kept going.  After I got back into my session, I had to pull out my phone and send a text...

Are you in Orlando?  Was that you I just saw in the hallway?

I was right!  It was who I thought it was!  We both ended up walking out of our sessions to talk in the hallway for a few minutes.  It was cool.....and awkward.

The rest of the morning was uneventful.  Lunch was good and we had some time to walk around after eating.  We were just about to head back to our session when another teacher sent us a group text message...

Just got word that they may be evacuating the building

We stopped right where we were!  More text messages were exchanged as we all waited to see if anyone was able to get more information.  We really didn't learn much.

Another teacher and I decided to try walking outside because it looked like there were lots of people out there.  We made it through the first set of doors before a hotel employee told us to please go back into the building.

I asked a lady that was standing close to the door if she knew what was going on.  She told me that alarms were going off in one of the buildings.  Then she pointed to the area that we had been denied entrance to and said, "I'm here and my child is over there and they won't let me get to her."

We ended up going back to our session where we eventually learned that the fire department had been at the hotel because a contractor working in one of the buildings had accidentally set off the alarm.

During our afternoon break, we were able to walk outside where we saw and heard two grown ladies yelling at each other.  We actually saw one of them grab the other before they took their argument back inside the building.  We could hear them as they continued to yell at each other.

When we went back inside the building most of their fight had died down, but there were lots of hotel employees keeping an eye on them.

We walked back toward our conference room and passed another exit/entrance.  There were also lots of hotel employees and one uniformed security guard around this door.  We didn't stop to see what was wrong, but we did see the security guard walking slowly around a white van that was parked outside the door.

Later, we learned that no one knew why the van was parked there and that the police had been called.  They showed up with the bomb sniffing dogs to check it out.

Disney's Coronado Springs Resort is NOT a boring place!

It was comforting to know that they were on top of everything though!

Can't wait to see what day two of this conference brings!

Summer Vacation Day 20 & a request from Sebastian's mom

So, the world really is in a mess, isn't it?

On Saturday, my friends and I were playing a stupid game where you only tell the last line of a story.  The line that summarizes everything.  Our only rule was that it had to be something that really happened.  I'm not sure why we started doing this.....ok, there were drinks involved.

It was so much fun!  It's funny how only hearing one line of a story can make people laugh so hard......ok, that may have been the drinks.

I'll actually protect my friends  and not give away any of their story lines.  Mostly because I would like for them to continue being my friends!

I started out simple and with obvious story lines...

And that's why no one lets me cook anymore.

And that's why you don't mess with a teacher on a Sunday night.

But then, my stories got better!  Actually I had two of the best.....

And that's why he shouldn't have responded to my stalking threat with a friend request.

And that's how I became Facebook friends with a homeless person.

Yes, sadly, those are the true summary lines of how I made two of my Facebook friends.  Honestly, just telling the summary lines makes the real story sound so much more interesting than it really is.  LOL!

Sunday morning, OCG and I drove for three hours to meet up with some old friends of his that had been vacationing on  the other coast of Florida.  We met them for a late breakfast.  The restaurant was crowded and everyone was happy.  We sat there with them for almost two hours talking and listening to the guys catch up and retell old college stories.  Then, we parted ways.  They had their car packed up and were ready to start driving home.  OCG and I also decided to head for home.  He had some important things to do.  I just wanted to put my pajamas back on and take an afternoon nap.

As we drove, both ways, we kept the radio on a Sirius country station.  No commercial breaks!  LOL!  Plus every time we go to Tennessee I only listen to country for some reason.  Since I'm still enjoying the memories from our Memphis trip and already looking forward to our Gatlinburg trip in a few weeks I wanted country music!

When we finally got back home in the late afternoon, he took off to do whatever it was he needed to do and I immediately changed into my pajamas.  I plopped down on the couch with my ipad and phone and TV remote and blanket and pillow and was ready to spend the rest of the day there.  I sent a quick text to one of my friends and she responded by telling me that was at a blood donation center and had been there for hours.

I thought that was so strange.  I wondered what had made her decide to give blood and why it was taking so long.  Please keep in mind that I haven't donated blood since I was in high school and passed out after doing so.  I'm so weird though that I didn't pass out right away.  I passed out a couple of hours after donating because I just can't seem to do things like everyone else!

Anyway, I threw the phone to the side, threw the blanket over myself and turned on the TV.  For some reason, the news was on at a weird time of day.  I changed channels only to find more news.

That was the first I heard of the Orlando shootings.  50 believed dead and more than that believed wounded.  They showed people crying and others standing in line waiting to donate blood.  Apparently, Orlando wasn't the only city in Florida with lines at the blood donation centers.  I watched what I could stand to watch before switching to something on Netflix.

I grabbed my Ipad and decided read some mindless celebrity gossip on TMZ to avoid the ugliness of the real word.  Even TMZ had reports of the shooting.  I couldn't help myself, I read the updates before moving on to the gossip that really didn't interest me anymore.

I moved on to Facebook which was also full of posted links with stories about the shooting, people voicing their opinions on gun control and politics and I cried.

I couldn't help myself, I just cried.  I don't live in Orlando.  I don't know any of the people involved and it happened at a place I would never go.  But, it happened.  It happened and people died.

People who had probably spent most of Saturday with their friends telling funny stories and playing made up games just like I had done with mine.  People who probably had plans for their Sunday, even if it was just lying around on their couch like I wanted to do on mine.

People.  They were people and they died.  No matter what you think or what you believe.  They were people.

I decided to stick with Netflix and avoid the depressing news.

Right before I went to bed my phone dinged with a Facebook notification.  I checked to see what it was and Sebastian's mom had tagged me in a post she made about people sending cards to Hallee Sorenson for her birthday.  She hopes we'll all send Hallee cards.

Now, you guys probably already know Hallee's story because you're more on the ball about things like this than I am.  She's autistic and no one showed up for her birthday party last year.  Her cousin posted her story and asked for birthday cards.  She has already received a ton of cards, but wouldn't it be nice if she got some more?

If you can, please send her a card!  I know that Sebastian and his mom have sent one and mine is going out in tomorrow's mail.

By the way, Sebastian just celebrated his 10th birthday!  Seriously, how does that happen?  Just yesterday he was five and in my class.  Is it wrong that I want to keep him little forever?

 I love that kid!

Now, if you're still reading this post, I need to ask for some good thoughts.  I'm waiting for some news and if you guys wouldn't mind sending out some good vibes for me, I would really appreciate it!

OK, so Memphis was awesome!  We had a blast doing tourist things and if you were lucky you may have even heard me on the Sirus Elvis radio station.  That's right!  I one of the millions of tourist that got recorded saying their name and where they were from.  Don't be too jealous!

Since coming back home, I've fallen back into teacher zombie mode.  It's not really my fault, the weather has been yucky.  There's not much else to do but lay around in pajamas watching the rain come down.

I did go out one yesterday to get the oil changed in the car and to buy food.  If the rain ever stops I may go out again at some point.

Next week, I'm supposed to spend a couple of days in Orlando for a workshop.  Tough job, right?  LOL!  Actually, right now, I'm wrestling with some things right now and may end up not going.  I'm just not sure at this point.

Don't worry, it's nothing serious, but I do have a decision to make.  What do you think?  Yes or no?
LOL!  (No, I'm not going to tell you the question)
